Arts

Gum Sing Musical Society:

Founded in 1980 by Leung Kwong Yip, the Gum Sing Musical Society is an amateur group that learns and performs traditional operas of South China, reviving a tradition of Chinese opera that dates back to the mid-nineteenth century in Victoria. The society includes singers and a small orchestra. The society rehearses on Saturday evenings, preparing operas which they perform every two years as fundraisers.

To join, go in person to the Office of the Gum Sing Chinese Music Club (557 ½ Fisgard Street).

Martial Arts

Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club:

The Wong Sheung Kung Fu Club was founded in 1974 in Victoria. The club has a very rich history and teaches the Hung Fat style of kung fu. The non profit club is an active member in the Chinese community. The Kung Fu club is non ranking and non competitive (no  tournaments). The  applications, weapons and lion dancing are taught after the basics are mastered. Our most senior instructors Terry and Mark have over 60 years combined experience. See www.hungfut.ca for more information or contact hungfut.victoria@gmail.com.

UVic Wing Chun Club:

Wing Chun is a style of kung fu that originates and is practiced in southern parts of China (Guangdong and Hong Kong). Some of its most famous practitioners include Ip Man and Bruce Lee (who based his own style of kung fu on Wing Chun). Wing Chun stresses speed, economy, and simplicity over strength, using relatively few but effective sets of techniques.

Currently, the club practices on Mondays at 8:30 at UVic and Fridays at 4146 Tyndall Ave. For more info and to join, see the UVic website

or email victoriawingchun@hotmail.com.

Victoria Wing Chun Club (Sunny Tang):

Like all Wing Chun clubs, this club stresses Wing Chun both as practical self-defense and as a practice for overall wellness. Its instructors have about 60 years of combined experience. In addition to classes, Victoria Wing Chun offers certification tests for different levels.
